WASH – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Programme
The Diocese of Niassa has, for many years, run community development programmes in response to the area’s most pressing needs.
9 out of 10 people in this provinces of Niassa and Zambezia, do not have a latrine and 75% of the population do not have access to a safe water supply; some of the worst statistics in Mozambique. To address this need and sit alongside the community development work, the Diocese introduced the WASH programme, delivering a project covering:
- Household level hygiene promotion
- Community level management of WASH
- Infrastructure
This project has 3 full time members. It was begun by Joanne Beale, bringing her training as a chartered water and sanitation specialist. Patricio is a long standing employee of the Diocese who has almost 10 years of experience in community mobilisation and facilitation and has a talent for managing construction projects. Mambo came from the Equipas de Vida teams and he now trains animators in hygiene awareness.
